The maid of honor or the mother of the bride typically assumes the responsibility of planning a wedding shower for the bride. They may either plan two separate showers or collaborate to plan one shower. Most maids of honor and mothers are happy to take on this task but it can be a stressful process which involves a great deal of planning.
The guest list is usually the first task on the to do list for the party planner. Once the number of guests is established it is time to start searching for wedding shower invitations. The invitations are a very important part of the event. Besides providing information on where and when the shower will take place, the wedding shower invitations also often give the guests a hint at the theme of the shower and provide the guests an understanding of the bride-to-be’s personality.
Themed Invitations
Wedding shower invitations do not have to be expensive or elaborate but they should reflect the theme of the party. This is important because wedding showers are usually planned with a certain theme in mind and guests dress, give gifts and plan games according to this theme. Making the guests aware of the theme ahead of time is very helpful because it helps to keep them from being surprised at the wedding.
In particular guests should be made aware of any dress code requirements on the invitation. This can save guests from being embarrassed by being either over or under dressed for the shower.
Personalize
Wedding shower invitations should also be a reflection of the personality of the soon to be bride. Although the bride to be does not usually participate in the planning of the wedding shower, it is thrown in honor of her and should reflect her personality. This is important because traditional wedding shower guest lists often include relatives of the soon to be groom’s family who may not know the bride well.
For this reason a frilly and girly invitation would not be appropriate for a bride who is more interested in nature or the outdoors. This is important because the guests who do not know the bride well may make incorrect assumptions about her personality based on the invitation.
Printed Invitations
Printed wedding shower invitations look elegant but they are definitely not necessary. If they fit within the budget of the party, suit the theme and reflect the personality of the soon to be bride, they are certainly acceptable but by no means are they necessary. Boxed invitations which can be found in card and gift stores are very commonly used as invitations for wedding showers. These simple invitations are inexpensive and serve their purpose.
Many mothers who host a wedding shower often make the mistake of using their telephone number as the number for guests to RSVP. This is a problem if the bride to be still lives at home with her mother. This can also be a problem when the maid of honor is roommates with the bride and uses their shared phone number on the invitations.
Although wedding showers are usually somewhat expected, they are usually thrown as surprises. For this reason care should be taken to include a contact on the wedding shower invitations that will ensure the shower remains a secret. Enlisting another friend or family members to handle the responses can help to maintain the element of surprise.
