Do friends and family call on you for wedding event planning first thing? Do you relish the thought of diving in feet first and organizing, talking to all kinds of people, and making preparations geared toward turning someone’s dreams into a reality? If so, you may be perfect as a wedding planner (sometimes known as a “bridal consultantâ€).
What Makes a Good Wedding Planner?
Wedding event planning takes special skills that only a few people come by naturally. It takes a creative, deftly organized mind that sees potential in things that most other people do not. If you find yourself turning what most people consider junk into decorative treasures, you have just the right type of “magic touch†couples pay top dollar to for planning, organizing, and presenting their weddings.
Maybe you have no direct experience with wedding event planning, per se, but have organized other a number of other events. If you are interested in breaking into the wedding field, you may be able to use a good deal of the knowledge you’ve already acquired. Some of things you’ll need to know specifically are how to arrange for the services of photographers and videographers, envision floral arrangement décor and following through with ordering it, juggle schedules and meetings for caterers, ministers, and officiants, as well as getting bridal party members together, to name just a few.
How Did They Get to Where They Are Now?
Most people that are in the wedding event planning profession learn the hard way and from the ground up. They either have served as assistants to working wedding professionals, or they have worked so long for friends and relatives, they have already known most of the ropes a long time before they decided to “go pro.†For these people, with all their years of unpaid experience, sometimes doing it as a business means only the simple filing of certain legal papers and adding advertising to an operating budget.
Are There Schools for Wedding Planners?
For others wanting to get into wedding event planning but aren’t quite sure how to start or where to begin, schools exist that offer courses covering all the basics. Like most schools, however, these institutions can only really teach you how to find out where and how to learn more.
Only real-life situations can teach you thoroughly all the ins and outs of properly planning a wedding. But enrolling in a school with the foreknowledge that you’ll be touching only on the basics – and then getting them down pat – can give people who are determined to pursue the field an invaluable measure of confidence.
If you’ve already got wedding event planning experience, but so far have only been doing it pro bono, why not get paid for doing what you already know and enjoy?
Many people consider themselves blessed who are able to truly love what they do for a living. And when your living is based on making the dreams come true of people in love, how in the world can you possibly ever go wrong?
