Wedding Cake Designs

The wedding cake is often the focal point of the wedding. Besides the bride in her wedding gown, the cake is one aesthetical element that attracts attention and that guests remember well after the wedding. Choosing a wedding cake can be a difficult decision because there are so many options in wedding cake designs.

Couples have a difficult task ahead of them when it comes to choosing a wedding cake because of all these options. Wedding cake designs have also gotten more elaborate over the years making the decision even more difficult. In this article we will take a look at the decisions a couple has to make and offer advice for choosing a wedding cake designer.

What Shape

The shape of the cake is one of the decisions a couple will have to make in regard to wedding cake designs. Although taste is equally as important to many couples we will discuss shape first as some wedding cake designers may only offer specific flavors for certain shapes. The traditional wedding cake is a multi-tiered, round cake with white icing. The layers of these cakes can be either separated by cake trays or attached with icing to build a cake which appears to be one piece.

Wedding Cake

While the multi-tiered model is the standard in wedding cake designs it is certainly not the only option. Wedding cakes can be sheet cakes, multi-tiered square cakes, multi-tiered cakes of other shapes, elaborately designed sculpted cakes or any other size and shape imaginable. Some couples may even opt for tiny individual wedding cakes for each guest or a group of many cupcakes arranged in multi-tiered layer or other attractive pattern.

What Flavor

Wedding cake designs can certainly be extremely elaborate but many guests are interested in knowing what lies beneath the icing. A white cake with white icing may be traditional but it is far from the only option available. Wedding cakes can be any flavor. Vanilla, chocolate, mocha, coffee, strawberry, orange, spice and fudge are just a few of the more popular wedding cake flavor options but cake designers often offer a wide array of flavors. Couples also have the option of choosing fillings for the cake. Some of the popular fillings include chocolates, fruits and creams.

What Icing

With so many options in wedding cake designs the appearance of the cake is just icing on the cake, literally. The cake designer will likely offer a dizzying array of sweet toppings for the wedding cake. Butter cream frosting is one of the most popular options but there are many different types of icings and styles of application. Although unconventional some couples even opt for chocolate frosting on their wedding cake. It certainly stands out and guests are likely to remember the cake because it is not traditional.

Some wedding cake designs involve the use of fondant to cover the cake. Fondant is essentially a sugar dough which is often used in cake decoration. Fondant creates a smooth finish to the cake and gives the cake designer a great deal of flexibility in the design of the cake. Fondant can be either cooked or uncooked. The cooked version can have different flavors added and can be quite delicious but the uncooked versions are usually not palatable and are often stripped off cakes before the cake is served to guests.
