Unique wedding invitations are not just about using different colored inks or using mailing tubes with scrolled cards in them. All of that has been done before a gazillion times. What you need is something really clever, something that says you are a couple with original ideas, who wants to have fun planning your wedding and wants to pay attention to the details.
For Modern Couples
Unfortunately, you can’t be there when your invited guests open their unique wedding invitations but you will certainly hear from them about how they liked them when they call to RSVP about their attendance. The invitation, apart from providing the necessary details, should set the tone for your wedding, give an idea of what guests can expect when they attend your nuptials.
It’s almost like a marketing gimmick but on a far more personal level. You can create fun, romance or an atmosphere of sincere and utter devotion, all with the kinds of invitations you send out.
The personal touch
Including a photograph of the two of you is a lovely touch and while it may have been done by thousands of couples before you, you can create unique wedding invitations by having a photograph turned into a portrait. Commission an artist to paint your portrait from a photo you supply and have it copied to be included on your invitations. It’s your choice whether the artwork is done using oil paints, watercolors or simple pencil or charcoal. Either way, it can look fantastic and people will know the lengths you’ve gone to.
Tie in with the location
If you are getting married in a location other than where you live, say a vacation resort or a small, quaint village, you can create unique wedding invitations in the form of postcards. These are especially fun if your guests don’t know you’ve become engaged. They receive a postcard in the mail, wonder who they know who is away on vacation, and then realize that the card is for the location of the wedding.
Secret nuptials
This may be more suited to celebrities but hey, you can pretend you’re famous if you want to. Avoid the paparazzi by planning a secret wedding. By using unique wedding invitations you can alert your guests to the time and date, but not the location until hours before the event.
This is very Keith and Nicole and it worked wonderfully for them! The invitation can be as creative as you like, or as traditional as you’ve always wanted, but the added intrigue of not knowing where the ceremony will be will show off your sense of fun.
High tech
If you’re very much a New Millennium couple and are right into high-tech gadgets and gizmos, try unique wedding invitations on CD or DVD. Make a sound recording or a home video of yourselves inviting your guests to your wedding and send each invitation in electronic format.
For added amusement, turn it into a Mission Impossible gag, complete with “this message will self destruct in 5, 4, 3 …†If the two of you met on the Internet, you might like to create unique wedding invitations in the form of a website and send guests the link via email.
What’s in the news?
One couple put together very unique wedding invitations to look like a newspaper but all of the articles, stories and headlines had to do with the couple, how they met and how they became engaged and gave all the details about their upcoming wedding. Guests were required to ‘write a letter to the editor’ to RSVP.
Traditional but still unique
Remaining with the paper card concept, try adding some pizzazz to create your unique wedding invitations. If you’re getting married in a garden, visit the garden and collect typical flowers or foliage, press and add the pressing to the card. For a beach wedding, apply a little coconut scent to the envelope.
Try cards of different shapes, handwriting instead of printing, bright colors instead of subdued pastels or anything else that you think would work. Once you put together a prototype you’ll know if the invitation will go over well or if it will be a disaster. Above all, have fun … you only get married once, enjoy every minute of the preparations!
