Plus Size Wedding Dresses

The wedding dress is for most brides the most important aspect of their special day. More effort is spent on the wedding dress then anything else usually. Plus size wedding dresses have come a long way as designers have now recognized the need for great looking wedding gowns for the curvier figure. Even so, the choices may seem limited.

How to get the best fit

Fit is one of the areas of plus size wedding dresses that requires most attention. If the fit is right, almost any design can be adapted to the fuller figure. One way to make sure you get the absolute best dress for you is to consult a dressmaker or designer or at least choose a dress off the rack from a store, which offers reasonably priced dress adjustments.

When it comes to fuller figure gowns, cost of the dress is no indication. It really is a matter of luck and trying on a large number of gowns. If you have already found the style you like but cannot get the right fit for you then take all the photographs you with you and have one custom made.

Don’t be too alarmed at the idea. When it comes to wedding dresses, the cost is fairly competitive and you should easily find someone to offer you a custom made dress for very close to a middle of the rage priced off the shelf gown.

How to pick the right dressmaker

Dressmakers have all sorts of experience in garment construction and fit. Wedding dresses require their own unique construction knowledge to ensure a professional look and feel. More importantly however, when choosing a dressmaker you need to ask questions that determine her ability to deal with larger shapes.

Fit, as I have already stressed, is very important. Ask your dressmaker to show you photographs of her work. Also ask her how many fittings she will allow for in her quote. Ideally she should have three. You can tell a more professional dressmaker or designer because they will use a formal method of custom garment construction.

The most widely practiced method is that of making a mock up or toile of your dress in a plain fabric just to test the fit before actually cutting your dress out. Then you should have a second fitting with the dress nearly completed where the length of hem and other important design features will be checked for fit and style.

Depending on this fit you may not need a third, however if your dress is completed a reasonable time in advance of the wedding, you should allow at least a third fitting one to two weeks before the big date in case your figure has changes. This point I have to make clear about custom made dresses. They are fitted so they can look perfect but any changes of more then a size at most is likely to make the dress unattractive and may not even fit.

Custom made or off the rack

You may still decide that plus size wedding dresses are better off the rack and perhaps less pricey. This is still a good option. If you still want a good fit but don’t want to start from scratch then it is still a good idea to take a dressmaker in with you when you shop and ask her if she can modify something you like at a reasonable cost.

The reason you should take her with you is that not all dresses can be modified even if they are a bigger size then you need. The cut and shape may be affected and therefore the dress may not be suitable for such adjustments. If you choose this method and cannot get a dressmaker to come with you, then you should be aware of the stores return policies.
