Original Wedding Vows

Original wedding vows are one way to make a wedding more memorable. Many couples rely on traditional wedding vows during their wedding but they are missing out on an opportunity to customize their wedding by writing their own vows. While traditional wedding vows are perfect for couples who are not comfortable expressing their feelings in front of an audience, couples who are comfortable with that emotion may write original wedding vows which are perfect reflections of their feelings.

Poetry and Songs

Combining song lyrics and poetry into vows is one way to create original wedding vows. Choosing a song which is particularly meaningful is one way to jumpstart the process of writing original vows. While reciting song lyrics or poetry is one way to avoid traditional vows it is not as unique as using the lyrics or poetry to create new vows.

The bride and groom can use the lines of the lyrics or the poetry as a starting point and add commentary describing why they find the lines to be so poignant. This makes the vows more personal because it offers insight into the feelings of the couple.

The Languages of Love

Reciting vows in a different language is one way to create original wedding vows. If the bride and groom are bilingual and will be conducting the entire ceremony in one language they may opt to recite their vows in the other language they speak. This is a delicate situation because it may result in some guests feeling as though they are being excluded if they do not understand the vows. One way to avoid this is to provide a translation of the vows to the guests so they will know what is being said and will not feel excluded.

If the couple already has children or has children from a previous marriage the children can help to create original wedding vows. One way to do this is to allow the children to write a portion of the vows. This portion may focus on the child’s feelings about the wedding, his feelings about his new step parent or anything else he chooses. Not only will these vows be original but they will also result in the child or children feeling as though they made a significant contribution to the wedding.

Take your Time

Original wedding vows should be written a month or so before the wedding. When writing the vows, the individual should ensure they have time to relax and focus on the task of writing the vows. This is important because if the bride or groom waits until the night before the wedding to write his or her vows, he or she may become incredibly stressed out and may have difficulty expressing their feelings.

Writing the vows ahead of time also gives the individual time to practice reciting the vows. This is important because you want the vows to sound very smooth and this will take at least some practice. The other advantage to writing the vows early is the individual has the opportunity to write the vows and then spend a few days not thinking about the vows. After this short break looking at the vows again gives the person a new perspective.

Finally a couple should not feel pressured to create original wedding vows. Many couples each year recite traditional wedding vows on their wedding day and have long lasting marriages. Writing wedding vows is not an easy process and if it becomes too stressful or time consuming the bride or groom should consider putting the project aside and planning to recite wedding vows written by someone else.
