No longer bound by tradition, almost anything goes with today’s weddings. As such, it follows that modern wedding invitations can be as creative and “different” as you like, as well. Invitations of subdued white-on-white with tissue and script-style writing just don’t have the di rigeur status once held by the likes of Emily Post. Read on to discover some new ways to invite the people you love and care for to one of the most significant events in your life.
Champagne-Bottle Invitations
One of the most innovative and unique types of modern wedding invitations is the “champagne bottle” request for attendance. The recipient is sent a small crystal bottle in a wood box. The bottle is uncorked (with requisite popping sound, of course!) just like a real bottle of champagne with the invitation rolled up inside the bottle.
The paper portion is attached to a string that is connected to the cork for ease of retrieval. Champagne-bottle invitations may be somewhat expensive, but this type of invitation makes an unforgettable memento in addition to announcing the specifics of an upcoming nuptial celebration.
Hear Ye! Hear Ye! Wedding Bells are in the Air!
Another modern wedding invitation idea likens the heralding of the event to that of a royal court ceremony. Invitations are rolled into the shape of a small scroll and again, sent within little wood boxes. The writing itself is done in Old English script. If you’re talented in calligraphy, you can do the writing yourself (give yourself plenty of time if you’re planning on more than just a few wedding guests!) or you can have the invitations printed professionally (mechanically).
Conservative, Yet Oh-So-Cool
If you’re not one to send champagne bottles or medieval-type scrolls to announce your wedding plans, but you still want a modern wedding invitation that’s all about good taste, consider our final idea: a gold, three-fold, rounded-corner invitation card with a glossy-like sheen in sage with an abstract leaf pattern line-drawn in white. In a small, tastefully written script on a small white banner on the first fold (the front of the invitation), a favorite saying is printed, something like “Two Become One” or some other similar sentiment agreed upon by the soon-to-be bride and groom.
The second and third folds of the invitation contain the beautifully scripted information regarding the who, what, where, and when of the wedding. Small response cards with return envelopes are nestled in tissue between the folds of the card and everything comes with envelopes in elegant pearl.
What Not to Send
Even though modern wedding invitations are a far cry from what was once dictated in the world of proper etiquette, some rules still do apply. Do not send e-mails as wedding invitations. This is a definite no-no and only serves to announce to the world (well, your friends and family, anyway) that you’re just too cheap to buy even the least-expensive invitations.
Additionally, never send any sort of invitation – modern wedding invitations or traditional invitations – without enclosing properly addressed and postage-paid envelopes. It’s considered beyond rudeness to expect your guests to pay for the note or to have to address the response card themselves.
It’s ultimately up to you, of course, to pick and choose just the right wedding invitation that not only suits your fancy, but also says something about you personally. Sending out modern wedding invitations can truly be a pleasurable endeavor if you give yourself enough time to make a good selection. So enjoy yourself, but don’t wait ‘til the last minute! And above all, have fun!
