Even though bridesmaid hairstyles are every bit as important as the bride’s, it would be a mistake for them to be more eye-catching than hers. After all, this very special day belongs to her and her alone. Her bridesmaids are there to honor her. The bridesmaids’ hairstyles should be attractive and complementary to the bride’s, not overwhelming.
Sometimes the bride chooses to take great pains with bridesmaid hairstyles. She may even request that they all wear the same hairstyle as she. Or she may ask them to wear their hair all in the same simple, understated fashion, while she wears her hair upswept or curled in some elaborate, decorated style.
It’s the Bride’s Option
Hair length that is short, medium, long, and curly should be taken into consideration when selecting bridesmaid hairstyles. If the bride wishes the bridesmaids to all wear one hairstyle and that style calls for long hair, for instance, hair extensions may need to be added to any bridesmaids that sport short hair.
Of course, it would be pushing the boundaries of friendship to ask a bridesmaid to cut long hair in order to accommodate the bride’s wishes for a short-hair hairstyle, so in cases like that, it would be far better (for the sake of future friendship!) for the bride to decide upon some other style.
One way to get around the problem of hair length in the matter of bridesmaid hairstyles is to incorporate hair accessories. Accessorizing with headbands, tiaras, combs, scarves, and other hair décor pulls the look of the hair of all the bridesmaids together to create continuity.
So even though one may have short hair, one very long hair, and another medium, by wearing the same design and color of hair ornament, an illusion of sameness pervades.
When it’s Left Up to the Bridesmaids
Unless the bride has specifically offered to compensate for elaborate bridesmaid hairstyles she has requested, most bridesmaids elect to style their own hair. Since the day almost always turns out to be rather hectic, it’s a good idea to keep a bridesmaid hairstyle simple, yet attractive.

Hair that’s smoothed back with a satin ribbon that’s been tied over a covered band keeps hair out of the face and out of the way while providing a sleek, elegant look that’s attractive enough for the most formal weddings. Hairspray, mousse, or styling gel keeps any stray hairs in place and a purse-sized container of whichever product you use should be kept handy. The greatest benefit of this type of hairstyle is that it is “do-able†for all but the shortest of hair.
Follow the Lead of the Bride
Nowadays, bridesmaid hairstyles run the gamut from classically simple and elegant hair fashions like chic chignons or prim pageboys to those that are fun – frizzy, spiked, spiraled, or multi-toned. Whatever suits the bride is what’s “right.†Or, if left to the bridesmaids themselves, whatever suits them yet doesn’t keep all eyes from being on the bride. So relax and go with the flow, letting your hairstyle decision follow the wishes of the soon-to-be bride.
